Seeds to Buy

The following seed companies have passed my non-Monsanto test (the search being for organic, open-pollinated, non-GE seed):

I greatly look forward to ordering new seeds come April and companion planting them according to my little diagram. I love a good plan.

Just a note – Seeds of Change is owned by M&M/Mars. Some people have reservations about this, others are OK with it. Either way, its good information to know and you may want to do some more research. Here’s a chart of who owns what: http://awesome.goodmagazine.com/features/009/009buyingorganic.html

Also, SoC uses plastic seed packets. SoC claims that they are more environmentally friendly because they are recyclable and reusable. You may wish to purchase elsewhere due to this fact.

(Doesn’t SoC have a lovely catalogue though?)

I would encourage you to seek out fellow gardeners in your own area. There are so many lovely folks around who are willing to trade their own saved seeds, or even give them to you free. These seeds will be better adapted to your climate as well.

Also, consider buying only open-pollenated (non-hybrid) and heirloom varieties so that you can start saving your own seeds. Its astounding to be part of the seed-to-plant cycle.

One more thing, in reference to a previous post on Monsanto, Territorial Seeds is not owned by Monsanto. It does get some seeds from Seminis, which IS owned by Monsanto.

Territorial Seeds has released a list of which seeds exactly they get from Seminis.

You can read the entire play-by-play here:

    Happy gardening!

Thanks Jake! Really good information. I’m absolutely with you on the seed saving front. Looking forward to reading Saving Seeds: The Gardener’s Guide to Growing and Storing Vegetable and Flower Seeds by Marc Rogers. One of the many gardening books I got at the library recently.
