Red White Black

She had a messy dress,” she jests to Chester, the man who questioned her motives for pouring flour on her lap. She always spoke of herself in the third person now, a habit she took up to lessen the pain of accepting responsibility for her actions. The ketchup she spilled on her white dress while attempting to drown a fly seemed less obvious doused in flour. She liked to pretend it happened to someone else.

Food, Inc.

For an an up close and personal look at the American food industry, don’t miss Robert Kenner’s new film, Food, Inc. Movies like Super Size Me and King Corn first introduced me to our postmodern U.S. food monster––one of the many reasons I decided to plant a garden.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

There is an island in the Pacific Ocean, now reported to be TWICE the size of Texas, made entirely of floating trash. I’d heard about it, but this is the first time I’ve seen pictures. Orange Pirate

Smashing his mother’s pumpkins, Peter the perturbed pedantic pirate sought to alleviate his concern for oft over-looked 1990s bands. Melvin

Melvin Kelvin as he was affectionately known by his parents, was obsessed with the temperature of light. He gravitated toward the cooler-colored end of the spectrum, believing tungsten and daylight to be shades of the past. A man of halogens and fluorescents by conviction, he felt it an obligation, nay, divine ordination, to sing their praises in the streets, always at night, beneath a green or blue hue, so he didn’t have to wear temperature sunglasses in public during the day.
