The Day of Earth 2009
“Happy Earth Day!” cried Wilma the waitress while waiting for her latte at Starbucks. She wanted a water to wash down her coffee but couldn’t bear to ask for an uncompostable plastic cup. Not today.

And Happy Earth Day to all. As one who has been recycling long before it was popular (read newspaper collection drives and “save your toilet paper rolls for Bible School,” etc.), and when it WAS first THE thing to do, and when I had to wonder why others had stopped, and when I had to grieve the “why?!?” there was not a place here to take recyclables, and celebrated again when there was, somehow, i am not sure that taking home my plastic utensils for reuse every time makes up or erases the carbon footprint of the typical accompanying one-time use of the styrofoam cup/plate at most church functions (which i have also taken home to reuse [the cup/plate - not the church function] for a multitude of other odd things, about which my family has teased me, but hey, recycling is recycling in my book, and they DO wash!)
The poem is elegant in its simplicity. More said with less. Beautiful. Keep it up. I do so love wordsmithery.
