Christmas Time!
Is anyone else SUPER-excited about Christmas? While I do not love the cold of winter, I do love decorating my home according to a theme and creating meaningful and silly traditions. Growing up, our family’s tradition was not to have any––making way for the much lamented and decorated “Christmas Trunk” in lieu of a Christmas tree when I was twelve––so celebrating the season the way my husband and I choose means a lot.
We just ordered a very mid-century mod aluminum Christmas tree to compliment this year’s gold, silver, Tiffany blue, and red color scheme. Christmas music plays in the living room every day. I have procured my clementine oranges, Whole Food’s chocolate truffles, and tea to savor together. I’m planning presents to purchase and make. The stockings are hung on the mantle. And this is just the beginning.
What are your favorite Christmas traditions? And which ones do you want to begin?

So far this year, I’ve celebrated mainly by listening to Fleet Foxes and a Pandora channel based on Crooked Still. While neither is directly related to Christmas, it just feels right and wintery. Also, I got Finnegan hooked on Elf. We’ve watched it together about four times since Thanksgiving. If you’re not feeling in the mood for Christmas, just watch Elf.

Not having the same routine at Christmas each year could be a tradition in itself, one where travel and adventure might take the place of same old same old. Going to San Antonio, being with family, having Granmacita & cousins up for a visit with all the cookies and pies and homemade tortillas, there were some pretty consistent positive notes to balance out the infamous trunk which was left behind because we spent Christmas in San Antonio. While there were a few mini tragi-comedies surrounding disputed gargatuan evergreens(I take full responsibility) Mom always decorated for the season including lots of candles, wreaths, pinecones and manger scenes. So while you are technically correct in saying we had no set traditions please note that there was a consistent theme of love, family, adventure and nearly always appropriate decoration. PS we’re Super Excited this year because the Blankenships will be with us for some more love and family adventure.

Well said, Daddy. We definitely ALWAYS celebrated Christmas, for which I am most grateful. And copious amounts of love, family, and adventure are set in my memory. I think we should write a Christmas song about it. Robert Earl Keen meets Bing Crosby / Frank Sinatra. Most modern holiday songs are way too serious. I like the fun, silly ones.
